Semax vs Selank: Which for Focus, Which for Anxiety?
Semax vs Selank, answered from the studies: Selank is the one tested for anxiety, in small Russian trials against benzodiazepines; neither has a controlled trial for focus in healthy people. Mechanisms, evidence, doses, side effects and US legal status in 2026.

Key takeaways
- For anxiety, Selank is the one with trials: small Russian studies in which it relieved anxiety about as much as benzodiazepines and, added to one, was reported to reduce its sedation. None had a placebo group. Semax has no anxiety trial we could find.
- For focus, neither has a controlled trial in healthy people. Semax is the one marketed for it, on the strength of rat studies of the growth factor BDNF and its developers' reports; its human data are about stroke recovery.
- The only head-to-head study gave each peptide separately to 52 healthy volunteers and measured brain connectivity on MRI. It found shared and distinct effects, not a winner.
- The studied doses (Semax 6 mg a day in stroke rehabilitation; Selank 2.7 mg a day for anxiety) were of registered Russian nasal drops, not the sprays and vials sold online.
- Neither can be legally prescribed or compounded in the US in October 2026. Semax has an advisory-committee recommendation and no rule; Selank has nothing pending.
The direct answer: if the question is anxiety, Selank is the only one of the two that has been tested, in small Russian trials against benzodiazepines; if the question is focus, neither has been shown to work in a healthy person, and Semax's reputation rests on rat studies and stroke patients. Neither is legally available in the US. Our Semax and Selank hub covers both in full, including the legal history and studied doses, and our guide to peptides for cognitive function ranks everything tested for memory and thinking.

For anxiety: Selank, with caveats
Selank's evidence comes from Russian psychiatric groups, and all three trials below list among their authors a scientist from the institute that developed the peptide. In the first trial, 62 patients with generalized anxiety disorder or neurasthenia took Selank (30 patients) or the benzodiazepine medazepam (32); anxiety fell to a similar degree on both, and the investigators reported that Selank also lifted fatigue and had a mild stimulant effect (Zozulia 2008). In a second, 60 patients with phobic-anxiety and somatoform disorders took Selank or phenazepam, another benzodiazepine; the authors described a pronounced anti-anxiety effect, a mild nootropic effect, and relief that lasted about a week after the last dose (Medvedev 2014). In a third, 70 patients were randomized to phenazepam 2 mg a day alone or with Selank 2.7 mg a day for 14 days; the combination worked faster and caused fewer benzodiazepine side effects such as sedation and attention and memory complaints (Medvedev 2015).
That is a consistent signal, and a weak one. None of the three described a placebo group or blinding, so a patient who knew they were getting the new peptide, rated by a clinician who knew it too, could account for much of the difference. Benzodiazepines are a strange benchmark, too: they act within hours and are not first-line long-term treatment for generalized anxiety in the US, where SSRIs, SNRIs and cognitive behavioral therapy carry the large-trial evidence. Laboratory work suggests why Selank might calm without sedating: in isolated brain-cell membranes it acted as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA binding, and it blocked the effect of diazepam on that binding rather than adding to it (Vyunova 2018). That is a mechanism, not a clinical result.
Semax has no anxiety trial that we could find, so there are no controlled data on whether it calms or unsettles an anxious person.
For focus: neither, and here is why Semax gets the credit
Semax is the peptide sold for focus, memory and "brain fog," for two reasons. In rats, one intranasal dose of 50 mcg/kg raised BDNF protein in the hippocampus 1.4-fold and activated its receptor, and the rats learned an avoidance task faster (Dolotov 2006). And its clinical use in Russia is neurological: in 110 patients in stroke rehabilitation, two 10-day courses of 6 mg a day were associated with higher plasma BDNF and better recovery of daily function than in patients not given it, in a study without blinding or placebo (Gusev 2018).
Neither of those is evidence that Semax sharpens a healthy brain. Rats learning an avoidance task are not adults working through a spreadsheet, and recovering from a stroke is a different problem from wanting to concentrate better. Selank's cognitive data are no stronger: Stroop and verbal-fluency tests used as secondary measures in anxious patients, where the reported benefit was fewer attention and memory complaints caused by the benzodiazepine, not better-than-normal performance (Medvedev 2015).
The only head-to-head study
One group gave each peptide, or placebo, to 52 healthy volunteers and scanned their brains at rest before and 5 and 20 minutes after the dose (Panikratova 2020). The investigators focused on the amygdala, a center for anxiety, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, a center for working memory and executive function. They found changes in how the right amygdala connected with parts of the right temporal lobe, some shared by both peptides and some specific to each. That fits the idea that the two do different things in the brain. It does not show that either one reduces anxiety or improves attention, because the study measured connectivity, not symptoms or performance, after one dose.
Taking them together, and what Reddit cannot tell you
People who compare the two often end up asking about taking both, Semax in the morning for focus and Selank later for calm. No study has tested that combination for any purpose, in any dose. In practice it means two research products of unverified content, two doses chosen by sellers, and no way to know which one caused a headache, insomnia or a reaction.
Forum threads comparing the two are useful for learning what people bought and how they felt. They cannot do what a trial does: separate the peptide's effect from expectation, caffeine, sleep and the products' unknown contents. The reconstitution calculator can do arithmetic on any vial, but it is built for pharmacy-labeled medications with a verified concentration, and neither of these has a label in the US.
Legal status
Neither peptide can be legally prescribed and dispensed in the US in October 2026. Semax came off FDA's Category 2 list on April 15, 2026, after its nomination was withdrawn, and FDA's advisory committee voted 8 to 5 with one abstention in July 2026 to recommend it for the list of substances pharmacies may use; FDA's reviewers said the largely Russian literature often lacked the routes, doses and study details needed to verify it (Hyman Phelps 2026). FDA has not proposed a rule, so nothing has changed. Selank, once in Category 2, is listed by FDA as nominated but withdrawn; it sits in no FDA category and on no committee agenda, so it has no path at all. The legal tracker records each step.
What to do instead
If anxiety is the problem, see a primary-care clinician or psychiatrist: generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder have FDA-approved medicines and psychotherapy with large trials behind them. If focus is the problem, ask for an evaluation; ADHD, depression, sleep apnea, thyroid disease, iron deficiency and medication side effects all impair concentration and all have tested treatments. Do not stop or replace a prescribed medicine with a research peptide, and tell your clinician about anything you are taking.
Bottom line
Semax versus Selank is usually framed as focus versus anxiety. The evidence supports half of that framing: Selank is the one with anxiety trials, small and unblinded, against benzodiazepines. Semax has no trial showing better focus in anyone healthy, and its human data concern stroke recovery. Neither is legal to compound or prescribe in the US, and the products sold online are not the ones the Russian studies used.
Frequently asked questions
+Is Semax or Selank better for anxiety?
Selank is the one that was tested for anxiety. In small Russian trials, it relieved anxiety in patients with generalized anxiety disorder about as much as the benzodiazepines medazepam and phenazepam, and adding it to phenazepam was reported to reduce sedation. None of those trials had a placebo group, and Selank cannot be legally obtained in the US. Semax has no anxiety trial we could find. For an anxiety disorder, FDA-approved medicines and therapy have far stronger evidence, and a clinician can choose between them.
+Is Semax or Selank better for focus?
Neither has been shown to improve focus in a healthy person. Semax is the one marketed for focus, because its developers reported better memory and attention and because it raised BDNF in rats, but the only indexed studies in healthy people measured brain-scan activity after one dose, not attention or performance. Selank's cognitive data are secondary tests in patients with anxiety. If concentration is a real problem, a clinician can check for ADHD, depression, sleep disorders, thyroid disease and medication side effects, all of which have tested treatments.
+Can you take Semax and Selank together?
No study has tested the combination for any purpose. The one study that gave both peptides to healthy volunteers gave each one separately and measured brain connectivity, not benefit or safety. Combining two research products also means two unverified contents and doses and no way to tell which one caused a headache, insomnia or a reaction. Neither can be legally obtained in the US in 2026.
+What is the difference between Semax and Selank?
Both are seven-amino-acid peptides developed in Russia that end in the same Pro-Gly-Pro sequence. Semax starts with a fragment of ACTH, the pituitary stress hormone, and is used in Russia for stroke and other neurological disease; in rats it raises the growth factor BDNF. Selank starts with tuftsin, an immune peptide, and is used in Russia for mild anxiety; in laboratory studies it modulates GABA receptors, the system benzodiazepines act on.
+Are Semax and Selank legal in the US?
Neither is FDA-approved, and no licensed pharmacy may compound either in October 2026. Semax is closer to a legal path: FDA's advisory committee voted 8 to 5 with one abstention in July 2026 to recommend it, but FDA has not issued a rule. Selank has nothing pending. Products sold online as research chemicals or supplements are unapproved drugs when sold for human use.
+Is the Semax vs Selank advice on Reddit reliable?
Forum posts are personal reports about products of unknown content, taken without a comparison group, so they cannot separate an effect of the peptide from expectation, sleep, caffeine or a good week. They can tell you what people experienced, not what the peptide does. The controlled evidence is the small set of Russian studies summarized on this page, and it does not include a trial of either peptide for focus in healthy people.
+What is the best peptide for energy and focus?
No peptide has been shown in a controlled trial to raise energy or focus in healthy adults. The closest is tesamorelin, an FDA-approved growth-hormone-releasing peptide that improved executive function modestly in one 20-week trial in older adults, a result never replicated. Our guide to peptides for cognitive function ranks what has been tested.
